Biblical Church Discipline
Published in Paperback by Banner of Truth (September, 1991)
Author: Daniel E. Wray

Review of Dan Wray's Biblical Church Discipline
Few resources are available about church discipline, and fewer still explain the biblical and confessional background to the subject like Dan Wray's book does. I got to know him personally in 1975 and found him to be one of the deepest reformed thinkers of our age. If you desire to have a deep background to the subject, this is a good place to begin. You would benefit the most if you have a reformed perspective and take the problem of sin seriously.

Dan deals mostly with the sin of individuals. Since he wrote "Biblical Church Discipline," there has been a lot of studies on the systemic nature of churches. Although systems theory was not constructed as a form of church discipline, it is applicable. After all, sin exists in structures, not just individuals. That is why, for additional reading, I would look to Edwin Freedman's "Generation to Generation" and works on systems theory from the Alban Institute. I believe the two approaches to church discipline are compatible and necessary. But, start with Dan Wray.

A hen and a bike?
Have you ever seen a hen riding a bike? Well, this story is as magic as that. Ms. Amelia loves her pets and she always does her best to find incredible gifts for them, this time, is Rosaura's birthday and she wants a bike. Even though it is not possible to believe that somebody will take the time to design a bike for a hen, a very mysterious person happened to pass by Ms. Amelia's house and he builds the bike. This story can be considered as Magic Realism for kids, a very common literary style in Latin America, that will fill your heart with happinness, laughs and nice thoughts. The drawings of Ms. Fuenmayor are spectacular (color pencil).

Big Bob and the Thanksgiving Potatoes

Authors: Jill Pinkwater and Daniel Manus Pinkwater

Excellent learning resource
I bought my children this book, and they *love* it! Join Big Bob as he takes a visit into town, shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, and help him correct the calamitous spelling and grammatical errors he finds on his journey. From the "Donna" Kebab shop, to the "Fish and Chip's" shop, it's fun every step of the way. Laugh as he tries to rent "Fried Green Tomatos at the Whistle Stop Cafe" from the "DVD's and Video's" shop, wince as he reads a "Smile, your on camera!" sign above the till, and grin, as he ultimately ends up at the "grocerys store" to buy his "Thanksgiving Potatos". I just hope that the author's middle name isn't a spelling mistake as well!
Well worth a "reed".

The Big Book of All-Time Favorite Bible Stories
A wonderful collection of 150 Bible stories from both the Old and New Testament. The stories are condensed nicely into one page parables. Just right for the "little one"'s attention span. The accompanying illustrations are charming and amusing. A great way to introduce a youngster to the characters and stories of the Bible.

Bioengagement: Making a Christian Difference Through Bioethics Today (Horizons in Bioethics Series)
Published in Paperback by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (August, 2000)
Authors: Nigel M. De S. Cameron, Scott E. Daniels, and Barbara J. White
Average review score:

Responding to the new medicine
Bio-ethics is a new and burgeoning field, effecting all of us. Issues like human cloning, genetic engineering, assisted reproductive technologies, genetically modified foods, and embryo research are just some of the contentious areas which are making an impact on so many of us. Therefore it is important that those with religious convictions bring their concerns to bear on the new and weighty issues being debated.

Too often such debates have been left to the scientists, medical professionals, politicians and even the corporations to sort through. And often these folk bring to bear a secular utilitarian worldview on such issues. But these important matters should not be left for our politicians and scientists to decide upon. People with a religious worldview very much need to raise their voices as well.

As Nigel Cameron states in his helpful introduction:

"It is in bioethics, that point of intersection of the professions, the academy, and public policy, in which the dignity of the human being is constantly open to re-definition, and in which most of the best in our inheritance - medicine, science, the professional idea - is coming under withering fire from those whose values are radically distinct from the Judeo-Christian tradition. Our failure at the start of the new millennium to engage the culture in a degree which mirrors the size of our churches is distressing. Our failure in this realm of bioethics is particularly discouraging, since it is here that the assumptions of post-Christians are shaping their idea of what it is to be one of us. Conversely, our opportunity to make a difference at this point is immense."

That is why this volume is so important. It offers a much-needed corrective to the various dehumanising and market-driven approaches to the many debates in the life sciences. It offers a fresh restatement of the biblical position which promotes the dignity and worth of every member of the human race.

In this book a number of experts look at many different bio-ethics issues, but all from the Judeo-Christian point of view. All up, twenty medical, ethical, theological and scientific experts examine the many vexing moral issues which new developments in science and technology have produced.

These authorities deal with such topics as: fetal tissue research, in vitro fertilization, stem cell research, health care issues, abortion, euthanasia, sex education, and many other issues. The emphasis is on applying a biblical worldview to these ethical and public policy debates.

The book does not just deal with specific ethics issues. It also provides chapters on Christian leadership in public policy, developing a Christian worldview, mobilising churches to engage in the issues, and dealing with the media.

Some of the leading thinkers and writers in the field come together in this one volume: John Kilner, C. Ben Mitchell, Nigel Cameron, Francis Beckwith and Terry Schlossberg, among others. Their meaty chapters feature incisive comment on the perplexing ethical issues of our day, along with practical advice on how we all can make a contribution to the debate.

Thus this volume offers a fine collection of articles which are both timely and informative. The need has never been greater for a Biblical worldview to challenge the secularists and utilitarians who have tended to dominate these debates. This volume is a welcome corrective to that imbalance.

Biology of Ticks
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (June, 1997)
Author: Daniel E. Sonenshine
Average review score:

A Wonderful sourcebook on tick biology and disease survey
The book goes into detailed discussions of the internal structure of ticks, and a general overview of taxonomy. Cultivation of ticks is covered in one chapter (laboratory scale...general discription). Also describes Tick questing behavior, and strategies for elimination. Vol 2 covers a wide range of Tick Transmitted diseases (both human and vetenary), and toxicosis. The descriptions of Colorado Tick Fever and Relapsing Fever are first rate. While most of the information is presented in an overview form, the notes point to a vast collection of specialized technical papers...including one that covers a mathematical treatment of tick density versus epidemiology rates for R Rickettsii.

A Birders Guide To Idaho
I found this book very helpful in guiding me to great birding places. I found birds I had always wanted to see with relative ease. It directs you to a spot via highways and mile markers. Not only to view birds, but other hard to find wildlife, such as Mountain Goats at Farragut state park. While visiting Idaho from Wisconsin, I introduced this book to 2 local people who were amazed and took the information of where to purchase their own book. Thanks to all involved in making this book possible. It was a great christmas present to me. You won't be dissappointed to buy this book!!
